Protect Your Home From Mice, Rodents and Other Pests This Winter

Between the chipmunks, squirrels and the mice, they will have a great time staying warm… and destroying insulation and wiring.

Unlike insects, mice and other rodents are not capable of going dormant for the winter. While some mammals, such as raccoons, do hibernate during the winter, most simply seek a warmer shelter. Read the rest of this entry »

Squirrel Control

Squirrels can seem harmless enough when you casually see them running around your neighborhood. Be warned, though, in your house a squirrel problem is a serious threat that can endanger your home and your family. As their natural habitat shrinks, squirrels are often forced into your attic, chimney, or crawlspace to live. Gnawing through loose roofing or foundations or slipping through chimneys and other existing holes, squirrels can quickly set up nesting and wreak havoc on your home. In the spring, their mating noises will annoy you, but this is hardly the biggest worry they create.

Destruction from Squirrel Infestation
The most common squirrel infestation is in your attic. Squirrels find this area of your home to be particularly welcoming when your attic insulation is readily available. Squirrels will tear up this insulation, shredding it to pieces and making it less effective. Shredded ductwork is also a likely outcome. With time, your attic will begin to emanate the foul odor of squirrel urine. Their burrows will also create an easy avenue for bats, insects, and other pests to enter your home or simply create a leaky roof. If the squirrel ends up dying in your attic, you’ll forget about the odor of urine, as the smell of dead squirrel causes headaches and nausea. The greatest danger, however, is the fire hazard they create. Squirrels will gnaw on anything and everything. If it finds wall space where your electrical wiring is hiding, the damaged wiring can set your house ablaze.

Disease
Less common, although still a real possibility, squirrel infestation poses a serious health risk to humans. Squirrels are primary carriers of tick fever, powassan encephalitis, and rabies; insects also commonly live on squirrels who can import all sorts of nasty micro-organisms and disease. This is one of the reasons homeowners should never attempt their own squirrel control solutions. While squirrels have become accustomed to humans, ones that appear particularly fearless around you may be rabid and should definitely be avoided. Among the many pests squirrels bring into your home, ticks and fleas are almost surely present, leading to pet infections as well.

Squirrel Control
Squirrel control is a job for professionals. You should never take a squirrel problem on by yourself. While you might be able to trap and/or kill one squirrel, more effective treatments will prevent problems such as dead offspring rotting in your attic or crawlspace. The health risk and the common pitfalls that arise from taking the matter into your own hands simply aren’t worth it. Squirrel control professionals have many ways they can deal with your squirrel problem. They can trap and kill the squirrels, trap and relocate the squirrels, deploy squirrel repellent and even use specially-designed lighting equipment to drive the squirrels away. After your squirrel problem has been addressed you should do your best to seal any structural weaknesses in your home, especially the roof and installing a chimney screen. Be aware, though, that even the most effective treatments may not prevent future infestations if you live in a place your local squirrel community finds desirable.

If you have a squirrel problem you are going to have to trap and remove them. Hiring a professional Minnesota Wild Animal trapper will ensure the trapping is done in a timely and humane manner.

Nuisance Animal Trapping and Control In Minnesota

Nuisance animals are basically animals that are not wanted in a given location, but who are treated a little differently than the vermin we call “pests.”

Whenever possible, nuisance animals are captured and humanely released unharmed in a suitable area.  Sometimes this isn’t possible, such as when a trapped animal is sick or injured.  But the goal is to trap and release the animal unharmed, far enough away that it will no longer create a nuisance animal problem.

Some of the more common nuisance animals we deal with are squirrels.

Squirrels are higher-class rodents than their closely related but less popular relatives, the rats.

There are many species of squirrels, but the gray squirrel is one of the more common ones.  Most times, squirrels don’t cause any problems.  They live in trees, eat nuts, and don’t bother anyone.  Some people even consider them cute.

But that all changes when they decide that your house is a better home than a day in a tree.  When squirrels get into attics, they can contaminate the home with their droppings and parasites, cause a fire risk when they chew on wires, and damage siding, sheathing, and roofing by their clawing and chewing.

Squirrels can gnaw their way into just about any type of opening or if they get their heads through the rest of the body will follow.  They are every similar to rats and mice.  But the squirrel is usually the one who will make the hole and the rats will utilize the entrance.  Some of the most favorite living spaces that the squirrel will take up residence are soffit gaps, roof vents, fireplaces, chimney flues, and they love when there’s loose siding to crawl around.  They gnaw into a roof’s overhangs, gable, shingles, and where 2 roofs meet.  If a squirrel senses a void beyond an area, it will gnaw and gnaw until that area becomes accessible.  This relentless gnawing can cause damage to your property and home.  Once a gap is created and a squirrel gains entrance into your home, or attic, it can quickly alert other squirrels of its find through smells.  The smell of a squirrel’s urine and feces rapidly attracts other squirrels to the area.  Just like that you have a squirrel infestation.  Scratching and gnawing noises in your once silent house take place after that, as well urine and fecal contamination of the accessible areas.

Because of the squirrel’s talent in climbing, it makes it all the more easier for them to invade your home!

Squirrels are a hording creature that among other places, will store their cache of nuts in your attics, chimneys, and wall cavities.  Once your home has been breached by these rodents it becomes their official home base.  In today’s society, squirrels have become less fearful of man, and have no problem living along side them.  Once one of these rodents gets cozy in your attic or walls, they can do A LOT of damage resulting in thousands of dollars in repairs.  The hole that the squirrel creates to gain access in your home then becomes a gateway to other creatures such as rats, bats, insects, and honeybees.  Once this “base” is formed, these creatures will continue to return, year after year, until something is done to halt their entrance.  On top of them creating a gateway for other creatures to enter by, it also creates possible leak issues in the future that you may be completely un-aware of!

A Wild Animal Control Specialist can save you the trouble and money that these rodents create, and handle the problem for you.  They are trained professionals who know how to seal up these openings, and rid any unwanted visitors from your home wherever they happen to be hiding.  Remember, it’s also safer, and a much better idea to let professionals handle something like this.  The misconception of these creatures being nice and cute gets a lot of people injured.  They WILL bite, and once this happens, other health issues need to be tended to.

Have You Been Hearing Noises in Your Walls or Attic?

Part 2 of  Wild Animals In Your Walls or Attic

The most common type of complaint in the field of wild animal control is that of animals living in the attic.  People hear the scratching, chewing, scampering, and walking noises up in the attic, often at night, and thus call a professional.  If you do hear noises in the attic, it’s probably one of five species:

Squirrels: Squirrels are probably the most common animal in attics.  These arboreal rodents usually live in trees, but many find that the attics of homes are drier, warmer, and safer than any tree – in particular, female squirrels with young will give birth to and raise the litter in an attic.  If you hear the scratching and running noises in the daytime, particularly morning and early evening, it’s probably squirrels.

If you have a squirrel problem you are going to have to trap and remove them.  Hiring a professional trapper such as Minnesota Wild Animal Management,  can help ensure the trapping is done in a timely and humane manner.  On top of removing the squirrels, we also fix the damage they have done, and repair your house so they will not return!

Can you get rid of squirrels?  Absolutely!

Squirrels Are More Than Just Nuisance Pests

Squirrels breed once per year in winter and early spring, having litters of 6-8 members.  Colonies can include several dozen members.  During the depth of winter and for shorter periods in the heat of summer, squirrels will go into a hibernating state.

Squirrels are primarily herbivores, eating grasses, fruits, vegetables and roots.  Squirrels are more than nuisance pests.  They can cause thousands of dollars in damage to your landscape.  They can also cause serious injury to people and pets.  They also can cause enormous damage by burrowing through wires and pipelines, as well as undermining foundations and general erosion.

Squirrels carry many diseases.  Squirrel control is geared to the seasonal lifecycle.  In the spring and fall, baiting can be very effective, as squirrels are heavily feeding on seedlings during this time.  Timely fumigation, during ground nesting periods is very effective.  Resting and feeding patterns will determine the best combination of baiting, trapping and fumigation to achieve optimal control.

Pest control in Minnesota for gophers and squirrels is not hard to find, but a true solution provider, one that will solve the problem, rather than potentially making the situation worse, is invaluable!
